that is going to trouble the stability of the 
country. So, in that sense, there was a concern 
about the stability of the society that he lived in. 
And I think he was clearly existentially, he was 
much happier living in Canada than anywhere else. 
He was stimulated by being in New York, loved the 
adulation of the Woody Allens, Tom Wolfe and all 
that stuff, but he really wanted to come home to 
Wychwood Park finally. That was home and the 
prairie metaphors were never too far from him. He 
phoned up once and said, “Tell Trudeau we’ve got 
to have a national joke project.” I said, what do 
you mean? He said, “You know my theory that 
behind every joke is a grievance and jokes are a
